The bontemps roulez big time on this infectious set from the recording auxiliary of the famous Mardi Gras Indians marching band. A gumbo of soul, R&B, funk, and blues, the Magnolias' mostly horn-driven music is about as danceable as it gets, but it's not without a serious side, as witness the album's lone ballad, "Louisian," an intensely gospelish story of a real-life flood disaster. Other highlights include an appropriately spooky cover of Dr. John's "Walk on Gilded Splinters," and the ridiculously catch "Hey, Hey," a Mardi Gras rewrite of the New Orleans standard "Iko Iko."
