This is an excursion into Louisiana's Cajun and zydeco music. Richard LeBouef and Two Step do not define any new territory, nor do they add anything new to Cajun or zydeco, but they sure do show up and give you your money's worth. They merge the two distinct styles of music, but unless you are a serious purist or a musicologist, there is absolutely no lessening of the music. There is a great joy in simply playing this music. Listen to "J'Etais Au Bal," and or "Bayou Noir/Back O'Town," and see if you can keep from moving in time with the infectious rhythms. The Bob Dylan song "On a Night Like This" does stand out like a sore thumb here, not because it is a Dylan song, but for the treatment it gets. However, they do a good job of interpretation on Clifton Chenier's "I'm Coming Home," doing it in more of a Chicago blues style than most. An infectious frolic through the swamplands of Louisiana. ~ Bob Gottlieb
