ALL THE RIGHT MOVES: Stefan (Tom Cruise) is determined to leave the sleepy Pennsylvania mining town of Ampipe where he's grown up. An exceptional athlete, Stefan sees football as his ticket out. His pursuit of a scholarship, however, puts him at odds with his combative coach (Craig T. Nelson). While rebelling against his coach and his town, Stefan takes up with Lisa Litski (Lea Thompson), an attractive schoolmate and talented saxophone player. Cruise graduated to leading-man status with this film, one of many early 1980s pictures with strong teen characters. His sexy, defiant presence carries the film. First time director Michael Chapman (cinematographer of TAXI DRIVER and many other films) proves himself especially adept in capturing the intense football sequences.
GREAT EXPECTATIONS: A rising artist, flourishing with the help of a benefactor, falls fruitlessly in love with his wealthy childhood playmate, who has grown to be a beautiful coquette. But the nefarious influence of her eccentric, spiteful maiden aunt taints their relationship. This film is a stylish, heavily romantic updating of the eponymous Dickens classic, staged in 1970s south Florida. Anne Bancroft, as Miss Havisham, steals the show from a cast of other strong young talents, including Gwyneth Paltrow and Ethan Hawke.
