BAD COMPANY (MAUVAISES FREQUENTATIONS) is a tough-as-nails coming of age story from director Jean-Pierre Ameris. Delphine (Maud Forget) is a pretty brunette with a sweet, shy, cooperative disposition. When she returns to high school after summer vacation, a new girl named Olivia (Lou Doillon) has joined her class. Olivia is tall and sexy with long dreadlocks and a bold, bohemian fashion sense. The girls are instantly drawn to each other and Olivia begins taking Delphine to parties to meet guys. Much more experienced than wide-eyed Delphine, Olivia has had multiple sexual partners and encourages Delphine to find out what it's all about. Delphine instantly falls in love with Laurent (Robinson Stévenin) who is ragged, emotionally charged, and needy. He tries to manipulate Delphine and constantly tests her limits, but she stands her ground and commits herself to loving him unconditionally. Once he realizes this, and sees the power he has over her, he coerces Delphine--and Olivia--into prostituting themselves in order to buy him a plane ticket to Jamaica. What follows is an intense, emotional, sickening journey made entirely compelling by Forget's breathtaking performance and piercingly sincere blue eyes. Underneath its nasty, but amusing, teen nightmare veneer, BAD COMPANY is a beautiful story about a lasting friendship between two girls.
