As long as there are people with an appetite for dark, mysterious rock & roll topped with poetic lyrics, there will be Doors fans. And as long as there are Doors fans, there will be posthumous releases from the band that only lasted for a few short years. This album of live rarities culls tracks from concerts in various cities across America in 1969 and '70. Extended versions of "Light My FIre" and "The End" showcase Robbie Krieger and Ray Manzarek's ability to create long, hypnotic jams where raga, Coltrane-influenced modality, and California psychedelia rubbed elbows. "Been Down So Long" and "Been Down So Long" show that Jim Morrison seemingly didn't have to be sober to convincingly lead the band through a gritty blues. The fragile beauty displayed in a Hollywood performance of "Crystal Ship" provides the kind of rare gemlike moment for which people look to albums like this one.
Uncut (9/01, p.88) - 5 stars out of 5 - "...This is a genuinely polymorphous music....This is music as magickal ignition, a timeless breathtaking glory..."
