Designed to follow the events portrayed in the
Disney feature film
Atlantis: The Lost Empire, this
GBA game offers players the chance to explore familiar locales as the movie's protagonist,
Milo Thatch. Chosen to lead an undersea expedition in search of the fabled city of Atlantis,
Milo soon runs into a host of problems, the likes of which can only be solved by navigating a series of levels in
side-scrolling platform style. Contrary to his studious nature, the young intellectual is capable of performing a selection of athletic maneuvers that include running, jumping, swinging, and climbing; all of which will be required if he's to surmount the obstacles that litter the ten levels of play. Throughout the adventure, players will find themselves engaged in basic mission objectives such as chasing after
Kida, or rescuing trapped crewmembers within the allotted time. Objectives are listed prior to each level.
In addition to the level-specific objectives, each locale hides a set number of crystals and a bonus letter that can be collected if the player so desires. Puzzles serve to impede the player's progress and are interjected throughout the many stages. Switches must be pulled and valves must be turned in a specific sequence. Occasionally, the player will happen upon tools such as dynamite or hacksaws, which will be used at a critical juncture in the journey. Punctuating the action are cut-scenes that utilize the in-game engine to flesh out the plot. Passwords are provided, allowing players to resume their progress at any particular stage. ~ Gavin Frankle, All Game Guide
