Full title: Feel Like Jumping: The Best Of Studio One Women.
FEEL LIKE JUMPING is a fine collection of tracks by female vocalists recording for Jamaica's legendary Studio One label in the late '60s and early to mid-'70s. The most well known name here is Marcia Griffiths, whose madly catchy title song is a gem of R&B-drenched rock steady. Other highlights include Dawn Penn's eerie, bluesy "No No No," which sounds like a Nina Simone recording of a lounge tune broadcast from Mars, Cecile Campbell's sweetly forlorn "Leave Me in Misery," and the dub-wise proto-dancehall of the Jay Tees' "Buck Town Corner."
One thing almost all the vocalists here have in common is their affinity for American soul icons such as Aretha Franklin, The Marvelettes, and Betty Everett. The production styles vary from track to track--smoother, more lush '60s pop/R&B-style sounds alternate with rawer, less polished, roots-ier efforts. For those seeking classic melodic reggae, this collection is a treasure chest waiting to be opened and a party waiting to happen.
CMJ (5/22/00, p.36) - "...Turns the long-overdue spotlight onto the many female singers who recorded for the Studio One label. Savvy listeners will note the distinct kinship this music shares with such American counterparts as the R&B and soul music divas from the '60s."
