Wanda Talks About Elvis
Personnel: Wanda Jackson (vocals); Danny B. Harvey (guitar); Don Randi (piano); Razor X (upright bass); Clem Burke (drums).
Recording information: Redrum Studios, North Hollywood, California; Bedworth Studios, Agua Duke, California; Stanley Recordings, Venice Beach, California (2005).
The dynamic and criminally overlooked Wanda Jackson delivered this tribute to Elvis Presley in 2006. As a friend and contemporary of the King in the '50s, Jackson received encouragement from Elvis, who pushed her to expand on her honky-tonk roots to encompass the newly hip rock-&-roll style. As a result, Jackson went on to become the first notable female rock star. Jackson tackles some of Elvis's best-known tunes here, giving them countrified interpretations that sound fantastic--even given her age at the time of the recording--in her raw, rootsy voice.
Entertainment Weekly (p.71) - "[T]his is a solid run-through of Elvis' '50s rave-ups....With a relaxed, resourceful delivery." -- Grade: B+
Dirty Linen (p.66) - "[A] fitting tribute to the King of rock 'n' roll, who enabled her to stretch herself and become the Queen of rock 'n' roll."
Mojo (Publisher) (p.98) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Jackson launches into each song like it means as much to her now as it did in 1956, and she leaves no doubt that the love for her mentor lingers."
