A heartwarming, funny, critically acclaimed film about a recent widower struggling to raise his kids. Danny DeVito delivers a performance that is "easily the best of his career."

A recently widowed father with a alcohol problem and his two young sons move from New York to the California suburbs during the early 1970s and find themselves coping with hardship, adolescence and frightening incidents which occur in the neighborhood, all the while growing closer as a family.

Though set in the Bay Area of Oakland and San Francisco, the film was actually shot in a different location: a huge flat section of land in the center of Los Angeles.

The director, Marshall Herskovitz, was the co-author of TV's "Thirtysomething." Writer, Steve Zaillian, directed his first film, "Searching For Bobby Fisher," in 1993.
