Griffith's late '80s albums moved from strength to strength, and this one is no exception; it's chock full of great singing, ace playing by the cream of Nashville sessioneers (including banjo innovator Bela Fleck and fiddle prodigy Mark O'Connor), and smartly written songs. Highlights include "Love Wore a Halo (Back Before the War"), a wry quasi-zydeco tale of numbers running and hot-sheet hotels; "So Long Ago," a wrenching love ballad set in 1969; and the bluegrass special "Sweet Dreams Will Come," with harmony vocals and electric guitar by folkie icon John Stewart and hot licks from mandolin whiz Sam Bush.
