Deep Purple: David Coverdale (vocals); Glenn Hughes (vocals, bass); Ritchie Blackmore (guitar); Jon Lord (keyboards); Ian Paice (drums).
Recorded live at the Ontario Speedway, Los Angeles, California on April 6, 1974. Includes liner notes by Bruce Pilato.
In choosing to promote the California Jam, the ABC television network was looking to put together a West Coast sequel to Woodstock set for broadcast in April, 1974. Deep Purple was chosen to co-headline with ELP and this gig was to be the high point of Purple's BURN tour. Despite losing Ian Gillan and Roger Glover in September, 1973, the band rebounded nicely with their replacements, David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes. In addition, the subsequent album recorded with this lineup quickly landed in the Top 10 upon its release.
The triumphant 70-minute set that followed featured Coverdale channeling Robert Plant on newer material like "Mistreated" in contrast to his predecessor's more operatic delivery. But despite these differences, the future Whitesnake frontman hit the high notes especially well on screamers as like "Burn" and "Space Truckin'." Guitarist Ritchie Blackmore was in a zone this particular night, veering between playing hard-edged blues during "Mistreated" and teasing the crowd with a few riffs of "Lazy" before launching into "Smoke on the Water." Stellar performance aside, the marriage between hard rock and network television became a stormy one as Blackmore ended Purple's set by destroying his guitar and torching his amps with gasoline.
