A man is imprisoned on political charges forcing his wife to take on the role of caretaker of his aged mother, a woman for whom the past is more vivid than the present.
In 1953 Hungary, a young woman whose husband is in prison moves in with her mother-in-law. In order to protect her elderly and ill relative from the truth, the woman pretends that the prisoner is in the U.S., directing movies. But she can only maintain this elaborate lie by composing and reading letters, that supposedly come from her husband.
This film won a special jury prize at the Cannes Film Festival.
Both "Time" and "The New York Times" included "Love" on their lists of best films of the year.
