Recorded at 1111 Sound Studios, Nashville, Tennessee.
Neo-traditionalists like Dwight Yoakam and Randy Travis were making waves in the late 1980s, and one of the artists to receive a windfall from these upstarts' success was George Jones. Nearly all these artists pointed to George Jones and Merle Haggard as "the real deal," and in so doing directed their legion of fans to their predecessors' classic recordings. Even more important, however, is the fact that these artists made simple, elegant production stylish again. As a result, 1989's ONE WOMAN MAN is one of the best sounding records of George Jones' later career.
The album starts out strong with the title track, a song Jones had previously recorded several times. Scattered throughout the rest of ONE WOMAN MAN are other older compositions, and these are the highlights of the album. Hank Cochran's "Don't You Ever Get Tired Of Hurting Me"; "Just Out of Reach," which was popularized by soul star Solomon Burke, and "My Baby's Gone," originally made famous by the Louvin Brothers. ONE WOMAN MAN also includes Jones' best novelty song of the 1980s, "The King Is Gone," in which Jones gets drunk and has imaginary conversations with Fred Flintstone and Elvis Presley.
