Recorded in England with a backing band of British session musicians, Tim Hardin's final album for Columbia Records was a peculiar side trip, but an entertaining one. Although Hardin remains best known as a sensitive songwriter, there is no original material on 1973's PAINTED HEAD. Instead, Hardin and his pickup band--including future superstar Peter Frampton, Can percussionist Reebop Kwaku Baah and Shadows drummer Tony Meehan, who also served as producer--tackle vintage blues tunes such as "Nobody Loves You When You're Down and Out" and "You Can't Judge A Book By The Cover," as well as more recent songs such as Badfinger's "Perfection" and Jesse Winchester's "Yankee Lady." Hardin is in fine voice throughout, and this remastered set picks up the subtleties of the smooth, soulful production.
