Cibo Matto: Miho Hatori, Yuka Honda (vocals).

The Japanese-born, New York-based duo of singer Miho Hattori and keyboardist Yuka Honda, supported by a backing band including Honda's then-boyfriend Sean Lennon on bass, broke onto the mid-1990s alternative rock scene with the danceable funk-rap of "Know Your Chicken." Although initially seen as a novelty, like a modern-day version of 1970s bubblegum duo Pink Lady, Hatori and Honda quickly proved themselves to be inventive and varied. POM POM: THE ESSENTIAL CIBO MATTO is a 19-track distillation of their three-album career that covers all of the band's myriad variations, from the giddy, almost punky hip-hop-influenced "Birthday Cake" to the duo's highest point, the gloriously dreamy 1997 trip-hop single "Sugar Water." The collection adds two previously unreleased tracks, a Dan the Automator remix, "King of Silence," and the Portishead-like "Swords and a Paintbrush."
