After a much-loved detective dies in the course of a murder investigation, Tennison manages to convince her superiors to let her take over the case. However, sexism runs rampant in Scotland Yard, and the overwhelmingly male police force resents having a woman in charge. The men immediately set out to undermine her authority by withholding information, providing her with false leads and employing a whole host of delaying tactics.
As Tennison struggles to take control of the situation, she learns that her subordinates' rebelliousness isn't the only problem she has to cope with -- there's a wide-spread web of government corruption, too...
