Rainer Werner Fassbinder directed this black comedy about a poet named Walter Kranz who imagines himself to be reincarnated from the 19th Century homosexual poet Stefan George. Struggling getting his own work published, Kranz takes a page from George and conducts a real life Theatre of Cruelty in which savage jokes, debauchery and slapstick merge to form eviscerating social commentary. One of Fassbinder's lighter films, SATAN'S BREW is filled with outrageous slapstick and perverse behavior, resulting in one of the director's most entertaining movies.
