Melody From "the Red Shoes"
Personnel: Michael Feinstein (vocals); Jule Styne (vocals, piano).
Producers: Judith Sherman, Michael Feinstein.
Booklet includes an interview with Jule Styne conducted by Michael Feinstein.
Few (if any male) latter-day standards singers imbue the songbooks with such passion and grace as Michael Feinstein. His crack at Brit-born genius Jule Styne would be among his best, even if it didn't include cameos by the gravel-voiced Styne himself. Feinstein's breathy, perfectly melancholy take on "I Don't Want to Walk Without You, Baby" as his fingers dance delicately upon the keys may be the definitive modern version. Many of the songs are short takes, but this ensures he hits all the high notes before closing on the exquisite "Time After Time," with an absolutely haunting coda of Styne interjecting in, asking if he can "sing the last 8 bars," musing how he's "so lucky to be Jule Styne." It's a truly incredible musical moment.
