With so much recent attention paid to Dean Martin as the quintessential Rat Packer, it may be easy to overlook his singing gifts, which were considerable. Was he a product of those Vegas-defined show biz times or something more? It shouldn't be forgotten that it was the Ohio-born Dean Martin who was able to put across the Italianate bel canto style of Sinatra and other city slickers in a country drawl that went over well in the South. You can hear large parts of Dino in Jerry Lee Lewis and especially Elvis. This SPOTLIGHT ON... collection showcases the other Dino however, the sophisticated, utterly unfazed crooner who could hold his own next to his pal Sinatra. In fact, it was Frank himself who conducted Martin's best single session, SLEEP WARM, eight of whose "bedtime" songs (Johnny Mercer's "Dream" and "Hit the Road to Dreamland") are included here. It's true that Martin's super casual artistry could easily pass over into indifference. But when the circumstances were right, few singers are such a pleasure to spend a little time with.
