After WORKING CLASS DOG became a surprise hit, thanks to the smash single "Jessie's Girl," soap-opera star/musician Rick Springfield followed up the album with 1982's appropriately titled SUCCESS HASN'T SPOILED ME YET. Clearly in the same mold as DOG, even down to its cover photo, SUCCESS proved that the earlier outing wasn't just a fluke by presenting another catchy and dramatic set of pop/rock tracks, most notably the angst-ridden "What Kind of Fool Am I" and the urgent, Journey-like "Don't Talk to Strangers." While the WRITTEN IN ROCK compilation should satisfy those looking for a healthy dose of Springfield's finest, SUCCESS is essential for those unabashedly devoted to the charming performer.

Rick Springfield's follow-up to his commercial breakthrough Working Class Dog wasn't quite as consistent, but it contained a number of solid power pop tracks, including "Calling All Girls," "What Kind of Fool Am I," "How Do You Talk to Girls," "The American Girl," and the Top Ten hit "Don't Talk to Strangers." ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
