Michael Feinstein made his mark in the 1980s and 1990s, swiftly earning a spot among the top three or four standards singers of the era. On his 1995 debut for Atlantic Records, SUCH SWEET SORROW, the singer-pianist mixes it up, blending classics like "Easy to Love" with new tracks by Jimmy Webb and Feinstein himself. There's an almost Disney-esque sense of fullness and hope on the record, which opens on the majestic, melancholy take on "Let's Face the Music and Dance," a striking version that changes direction beautifully many times. It's a measured record, aptly understated at times, gleefully over-the-top at others, but always engaging--a high point in the vocalist's catalogue.
