Epic historical film, which takes place in 19th century China, about a Scottish man who holds the position of Tai-Pan (or head merchant) of both Canton and Hong Kong. The trader faces resistance from a sinister competitor and his son, who wish to end the merchant's dominance in the trade industry. Meanwhile, the Scotsman begins a romance with an alluring Chinese woman...

"Tai-Pan" is the first American film shot completely in China. Other locations were Macau and Hong Kong.
