A superb made-for-TV drama about the infamous P.O.W. camp where 14,000 Union soldiers died under conditions not unlike those found in World War II Nazi camps.

George C. Scott directed this powerful adaptation of Saul Levitt's 1959 play about one of America's most notorious trials -- the prosecution of Henry Wirz for atrocities committed against POWS during the Civil War.
Wirz was in charge of the Andersonville prisoner of war camp in Georgia. There, the Confederate Army held many Yankee soldiers captive and subjected them to severe overcrowding, rat-filled facilities and a lack of food. Although Wirz argued that he was only following military orders and, therefore, couldn't be held accountable, prosecutors tried to prove otherwise...

Aired originally on NET as a presentation of Hollywood Television Theatre on May 10, 1970.

George C. Scott appeared in the original 1959 play.
