Kicking off with his breakthrough 1942 tune "Walking the Floor Over You" (widely considered the first real honky-tonk hit) the set continues through to the mid-'60s, when Tubb made his last truly essential recordings. (For the last 15 years of his life, Tubb still recorded and toured, but his ongoing battle with emphysema sapped his distinctively nasal, twangy voice.) Containing nothing but country chart hits with no alternate takes or previously unreleased material, THE DEFINITIVE HITS COLLECTION is the best possible starting point for newcomers.
