Perry Como is one of the great crooners. His career started in the 1930s and lasted through the 1970s. He has a full, heavy baritone that takes up where Bing Crosby left off, casting an especially effective spell when he handles romantic ballads like "All Through the Day."

This CD gathers together some of his earliest successes, from the 1940s and 1950s, the period when his stature in American popular song rocketed upward. The songs were confections of the day and vary from ballads to uptempo novelties. His style, warm and deceptively drowsy sounding, fits hand-in-glove with some of the great works of the time. Jerome Kern's "More and More" finds Como filling a bill that only Sinatra and Crosby had been thought to be able to occupy. As for the novelty tunes that became prominent with the 1950s, "Papaya Mama" has Como's pleasant naturalism lending a solidity to the far flung festivity of the composition.
