Dex (Donal Logue), an overweight slacker living in Santa Fe, excels at charming women. The reason behind his success is apparently "the Tao of Steve," a pseudo-philosophy, largely about dating women, developed by Dex and his drinking buddies. While this lazy lifestyle with no commitment seems to work, Dex gradually begins to realize there's something more meaningful missing from his life. When he meets Syd (Greer Goodman), a beautiful set designer, Dex discovers the Tao of Steve isn't a foolproof way of thinking, and must get in touch with his real emotions to get the girl of his dreams.

Jenniphr Goodman's directorial debut is a highly enjoyable romantic comedy. Set along the gorgeous desert landscapes of New Mexico, Goodman's film manages to echo its surroundings with its easy-going pace and attitude. In his first leading role, Logue is immediately likeable, portraying Dex as a surprisingly complex man with simple ideals. With its insightful look at the ups and downs of finding love, THE TAO OF STEVE is as endearing as its half-baked philosophy.

Dex (Donal Logue) is a loveable kindergarten teacher who has extraordinary success with women, and a sexual appetite to match. Women go crazy for him, and men admire his finely-tuned romantic philosophy. The only woman who is not wooed by his charms is Syd (Greer Goodman), an old college friend. THE TAO OF STEVE is a light and spunky romantic comedy directed by Jenniphr Goodman. The film, and Logue's role in it, got the Outstanding Performance Special Jury Prize at Sundance 2000.

Theatrical Release: August 4, 2000 (LA/NY)

THE TAO OF STEVE was shot on location in New Mexico.

For THE TAO OF STEVE movie posters, Sony Picture Classics used the body of Mike Schank from the AMERICAN MOVIE poster and substituted actor Donal Logue's head. Though some jewelry was removed and a little girth was added, Sony confirmed that the body in the poster belongs to Mike Schank.

Donal Logue gained over 25 pounds to play the role of Dex.
