Arthur Alexander was perhaps the most-underrated soul singer of the sixties. Even though his songs have been performed by such major acts as The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and even Pearl Jam, Alexander never enjoyed the same respect accorded to similar artists like Otis Redding and Sam Cooke. Blessed with a warm, engaging voice and an ability to craft emotionally direct lyrics and haunting, minor-key melodies, Alexander made records that were years ahead their time. ULTIMATE collects 16 tracks that were recorded in Alexander's 1962-1965 prime.
It is a testament to Alexander's immense talent that his original recordings of songs that were later recorded by some of the biggest names in rock remain the definitive versions of these soul-pop standards. On classic tracks like "Anna" and "You Better Move On," you can hear just how much Alexander influenced The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. Hounded by business and personal problems, Alexander sadly never fulfilled the potential promised by his early hits. Though Alexander's relatively small recorded legacy has insured that he will never enjoy the same acclaim as singers like Redding or Cooke, ULTIMATE is absolutely essential for any fan of soul, R&B and early rock and roll.
