Multi-instrumentalist and bandleader Todd Sickafoose has created a lovely, complex jewel of shifting sounds, textures, and surfaces in TINY RESISTORS. With the help of an eight-piece ensemble, Sickafoose, who plays bass, keys, accordion, and vibes, among other instruments, builds on seemingly simple rhythm and melodic bases, but orchestrates these into ambient soundscapes that captivate and transport the listener. Guests Andrew Bird and Ani DiFranco make appearances, but it's the unclassifiable amalgam of jazz, rock, contemporary classical, and film music that makes TINY RESISTORS one of the most original and compelling jazz releases of 2008.
The Wire (p.73) - "Deliciously enervated latterday fusion from the bass player/multi-instrumentalist, who's worked with Scott Amendola, David Borgo and John Zorn. This is confidently retro music..."
Down Beat (p.74) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "[T]he New York bassist builds his oft-genial, mildly exotic and somewhat dreamy tunes from simple melodies that state themselves and then multiply into little labyrinths."
JazzTimes (p.79) - "[T]horoughly original, endlessly creative, unabashedly modern without being iconoclastic....This stuff grooves and simmers."
