Two years after the death of his wife Gillian (Michelle Pfeiffer) in a boating accident, grieving widower David (Peter Gallagher) discovers that his obsession with her has alienated his sensitive teenage daughter Rachel (Claire Danes) and caused him to lose touch with reality. He learns, with the help of Gillian's ghost, to relinquish the past and mend his relationships with her other survivors. This sensitive examination of grieving and loss, filmed on Nantucket, was co-written by David E. Kelley, creator of ALLY MCBEAL.

Ever since David's wife Gillian was killed on her birthday, he has been completely incapable of accepting her death. Each day, he still goes down to the beach to "talk" to her -- and keep her alive in his mind. This unwillingness to face reality has left his relationship with his teenage daughter Rachel seriously strained.
But a family get-together to celebrate Gillian's birthday leads to confrontations between various relatives (including David and Rachel) that brings long-dormant emotions to the fore. As a result, father and daughter make peace with each other, and begin the long journey to accepting Gillian's death.

Released theatrically in New York City October 18, 1996.

Color by Technicolor; in SDDS (Sony Dynamic Digital Sound).

Additional cast: Laurie Fortier (Cindy) and Freddie Prinze Jr. (Joey).

Based on the play by Michael Brady. Director Michael Pressman also helmed the stage version.

Michelle Pfeiffer is the real-life wife of screenwriter David E. Kelley -- who also has written and produced such TV shows as "Picket Fences" and "Chicago Hope."
