This is the third volume in the fan-favorite shojo manga (Japanese female-oriented graphic novel) series about the powerful, kind-hearted medium Subaru, his twin sister Hokuto, and their secretive friend Seishiro. Three girls on a telephone chat line, convinced that they've been chosen to save the Earth from destruction in 1999, believe that everyone with a telephone extension ending in 1999 is their nemesis and must be magically cursed. Subaru is hired to stop the curses and prevent the girls from suffering the consequences of their reckless, untutored magic. The story in this volume echoes a subsequent CLAMP series, X/1999, in which 14 chosen people--seven per side--battle it out to decide the Earth's fate in 1999. Some of the characters in TOKYO BABYLON also play a role in that series. The black-and-white art features CLAMP's typically beautifully dressed, gorgeously feminized characters--a running motif in the book is that Subaru looks nearly identical to his sister Hokuto. Reproduced in its original Japanese right-to-left format, the book also includes a pull-out color frontispiece, a glossary of cultural references, a sound effect index, and lyrics from the TOKYO BABYLON soundtrack.
