This album is a companion to SIMMER DOWN AT STUDIO ONE. Combined they are the total output recorded by The Wailers at Studio One in Kingston, Jamaica from 1963-66. There's an incredible rough-and-tumble excitement here. Reggae had yet to become the worldwide phenomenon it was in the '70s, and It's clear that Marley, Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer were listening eagerly to the radio, hearing all manner of rock and pop from America and England. This music is a product of the ska popular on their island, and anything else that caught their fancy.

Listening to "Can't You See" it's hard to imagine that they weren't as taken with the Rolling Stones as any other enthusiastic young band. The alternate take of "Sinner Man" shows the R&B influence added into the stew that became reggae. And the opening measures of "Who Feels It Knows It" are nothing short of inventive pop thinking. Not only is this an important historical look at the early days of these major artists, it's also an invigorating delight.
