Though Cameo would eventually achieve fame on the strength of catchy, angular synth-funk numbers like "Word Up," this earlier offering (1977) finds the group exulting in a decidedly more '70s funk sound. The occasional synthesizer line does pop up, but popping bass lines and perfectly placed horn stabs are the identifying marks of most of these tunes. The insistent grooves are helped along by chittering rhythm guitar and percolating percussion. "Why Have I Lost You," with its lush, balladic feel, even finds the group venturing into the Philly soul area. The between-song spoken interjections, especially the one that comes before the celebratory, slightly Earth, Wind & Fire-ish title tune, are ample evidence of Cameo's well-deployed sense of humor, an essential quality for a great funk band, which is exactly what Cameo is.
