This version of WHITE PONY includes the track "Back To School (Mini Maggit)", formerly available as a link on an enhanced version of WHITE PONY.
Deftones: Chino Moreno (vocals, guitar); Stephen Carpenter (guitar); Chi Cheng (bass); Abe Cunningham (drums); Frank Delgado (turntables).
Recorded at The Plant Recording Studios, Sausalito, California.
"Elite" won the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance.
The Deftones have always been known for walking a tightrope of extremes, from crunchy guitar riffing to gentle, melodically fleshed-out chords, with vocals ranging from a breathy hush to devilish bellowing, and some occasional hip-hop phrasing for good measure. With WHITE PONY, Deftones mastermind and vocalist/guitarist Chino Moreno has brought the band to full gallop.
Somewhat inspired by the game show, "Feiticeira" recounts a chilling abduction from the first person perspective, while "Digital Bath" features moody verses and brutal choruses. "Elite" uses a vocal approach usually reserved for death metal bands while "Rx Queen" is morbidly romantic. "Teenager" celebrates the purity of adolescence and "Passenger" showcases a vocal duel between Tool/A Perfect Circle frontman Maynard James Keenan who co-wrote the track. Deftly produced by the band and metal producing veteran Terry Date, WHITE PONY is far from a sideshow; it's the main event.
Rolling Stone (7/20/00, p.139) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...a classic alternative-rock album, as gentle and catchy as it is dark....trading nuance for studio-generated crescendoes..."
Entertainment Weekly (7/7/00, p.130) - "...Their brutality will burn its way into your memory banks." - Rating: B+
Q (7/00, pp.112-4) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...Their most adventurous and assured album to date....Best appreciated if your 16, covered in spots and not scared of falling off your skateboard...a welcome addition to 2000's modern-metal canon."
Alternative Press (7/00, p.97) - 5 out of 5 - "...Explores rock's sonic possibilities from the head and the gut, without diluting the intention or diminishing its essence....WHITE PONY is invigorating."
CMJ (1/08/01, p.24) - Included in CMJ's "Best Loud Rock Albums" of 2000.
CMJ (6/19/00, p.3) - "...More influenced by new wave than new metal....[the album] is a masterwork of fluctuating dynamics..."
Melody Maker (6/27/00, p.76) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...A very good album....Deftones will always be the most rewarding of the current nu-metal crop..."
NME (Magazine) (6/17/00, p.40) - 8 out of 10 - "...Regarded as the biggest American rock album to be released this year....it's a good job they've made a great album....And it sounds like Foreigner."
