A slick whodunit about a straight-laced small town deputy sheriff, a charismatic but unpredictable arms dealer, and a slumming, thrill-seeking heiress with a weakness for dangerous men, underground politics and other lost causes.

Ray is running for sheriff of a small western town. One night he discovers a dead Indian carrying $500,000 cash. Realizing that if he solves this mystery single-handedly, it will assure his position as sheriff, Ray takes the money, setting out to find the murderer. But before long he's in over his head: working undercover, meeting with dangerous criminals, and caught up in a covert FBI operation.
