Quicker Than the Eye on CD

The new trio release by Rex Cadwallader, Mike Asetta and Arti Dixson delivers a song cycle of originals by Cadwallader, and a blazing set of performances. Pianist Cadwallader's fast fingered forays into musical magic, and the rock-solid support and soloing of bassist Asetta and drummer Dixson set the stage for major recognition for this great group. Following on the heels of the well received previous release, with flutist Ali Ryerson, of 'Broadway - music from West Side Story,' the trio soars well beyond the confines of well known melodies and harmonies. With well crafted original material Cadwallader, Asetta & Dixson probe the outer limits of the contemporary jazz trio. Cadwallader's piano sound incorporates essential elements of a concert grand, but with an underpinning of Fender Rhodes and a hint of voices that defines the sound of the ensemble. Dixson's Dejohnette-like chops and Asetta's expansive bass playing lays down an unstoppable groove on every track. Drawing on contemporary influences like Chick Corea and The Yellowjackets, as well as the 'smooth jazz' sounds of Bob James and David Benoit, this superbly crafted and recorded collection of tracks is a spiritual collaboration between jazz masters and their willing pupils.
