Inside the Gate on CD

Some of my best childhood memories are of the Unity Grove Camp Meeting in Palmetto, Alabama. I can still see the heat shimmering off the tin roof of the tabernacle and smell the fresh sawdust spread for the floor. I can hear the buzzing of bees through the service and the lovely harmonies of my Great Aunt Hortense as the congregation sings from shaped note hymnals. These memories take me back to a simpler place and time. The years have flown unnoticed. It's been a good life, after all! Camp meeting was a time to see the great aunts and uncles and to play with all your cousins, but it was also a time to hear preaching, praying and sing to the clicking keys of an old upright piano. My parents, John and Hilton Vice Hammond, are musicians, and they taught me to love singing and the joy and promise of the old hymns. So this album is about the way I grew up, and about longing for those days gone by. It's for the old fiddlers and pickers who shaped my love for acoustic music. For all those who taught and nurtured me, I remember you every day! Ginger Ginger Boatwright is one of the shining lights of the acoustic/bluegrass genre. She began playing and singing when there were few women playing this style of music, and she made her name with her group, RED, WHITE & BLUE (grass)and later as lead vocalist for the Doug Dillard Band. She has encouraged and mentored countless young musicians and singers over the years and is considered one of the female icons of bluegrass music. She has talked of doing a gospel album since she started recording. Inside the Gate is that album, and it was worth the wait. Jerry Hammond.
