Recorded in New York, New Orleans, and Atlanta between May 1953 and November 1954, Charles is heard in three different settings: solo, fronting a small combo with a horn section, and with a full orchestra. It was at this point in his career that Ray Charles hooked up with Atlantic moguls Ahmet Ertegun and Jerry Wexler and recorded the passionate, gospel-inspired material that gained him worldwide recognition, brought to fruition by the hit "I've Got a Woman."
