36 Classic Tracks by Johnny Cash on CD


Union Square's 36 Classic Tracks is essentially a solid and wonderful collection of Cash cuts from his Sun Records and Columbia years. This double-disc set would be perfect for the Cash fan who is not familiar with his early work, having come into contact only with his material recorded at the end of his life for Rick Rubin's American Recordings label. Disc one ranges from the years 1955 to 1960 and contains every Cash classic of the period, including "Hey Porter," "Cry, Cry, Cry," the original versions of "I Walk the Line" and "Folsom Prison Blues," "Ballad of a Teenage Queen," "Big River," and "Luther Played the Boogie." Disc two is similarly loaded and contains more Sun cuts as well as the prime tunes from his Columbia years, such as "Sunday Morning Coming Down," "Long Black Veil," "Ring of Fire," and "A Boy Named Sue." What should have been here -- and isn't -- is "San Quentin," but that's a small complaint. The sound is adequate and the price is absolutely right. ~ Thom Jurek, All Music Guide
