All Star Parade 1943-1949 by Harry James on CD

The music on this double CD is taken from radio broadcasts by Harry James' big band from 1943-1949. Most of the performances were previously unreleased, the sound quality is decent, and there is a nice balance between jazz stomps and vocal ballads. There is singing along the way from Helen Forrest, Kitty Kallen, Ginny Powell, and Marion Morgan, a fine number featuring the obscure but talented Patricia Lindon ("I Walk My Post in a Military Manner"), and guest features for Cab Calloway ("A Blue Serge Suit") and pianist Carmen Cavallaro ("I Got Rhythm"). The key soloists from the James orchestra are altoist Willie Smith, tenor saxophonist Corky Corcoran, trombonists Ziggy Elmer and Juan Tizol, the various pianists, guitarist Allan Reuss (who by then had switched to electric guitar), and the exciting trumpeter/leader. The music is programmed in chronological order and in spots one can hear the influence of bebop (which James reflects now and then in his playing from 1946 on). Among the many highlights are "Mr. Co-Ed," "St. Louis Blues," "Carnival," "King Porter Stomp," "The Eight Bar Riff," "Air Mail Special," "The Beaumont Ride," "The Back Beat Boogie," an uptempo "Tuxedo Junction," and "The Arrival." Despite having some very weak liner notes, this is a superior set that is highly recommended to swing fans and listeners who may not realize how great a trumpeter Harry James was during his prime years. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
