Artist's Choice: Highlights from Turn Out the Stars by Bill Evans on CD
In 1996, Warner Bros. came out with a limited-edition six-CD set featuring pianist Bill Evans and his trio (with bassist Marc Johnson and drummer Joe LaBarbera) playing at the Village Vanguard just a few months before Evans' death. This single CD is taken from the expensive collection and reportedly includes Evans' favorite performances from what was originally planned to be a two-LP set. Although Bill Evans completists and collectors will prefer the larger box, this superior CD should satisfy more general listeners. It does feature the highly influential pianist in top form on nine selections, including the ironically titled "Bill's Hit Tune," "My Foolish Heart," "Like Someone in Love," the title cut and a five-and-a-half-minute excerpt from a much lengthier "Nardis." ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
