Listeners may feel that Ludwig van Beethoven's Symphony No. 5 in C minor is overly familiar, and that his Symphony No. 1 in C major is only slightly less so; indeed, many already possess a favorite recording or two that should satisfy any desire to hear these well-known masterpieces, if the occasion arises. So why, then, should anyone seek out Bernard Haitink's live 2006 recording with the London Symphony Orchestra, beyond the audio buff's needs to own a good hybrid SACD of these works and to hear them in lifelike multichannel sound on a high end system? Because Haitink and the LSO deliver such compelling accounts -- driven and triumphant in the Symphony No. 5, and disarmingly witty and urbane in the Symphony No. 1 -- these pieces feel expressively revitalized; and because the minutest details of the scores are brilliantly articulated, this is a recording to make some people consider if they've ever properly heard these symphonies before. LSO Live provides stunningly realistic reproduction with no distracting audience noises; and thanks to the best recording technology available, expert engineering, and the responsive acoustics of London's Barbican, the orchestral sound is both crisp and naturally resonant.
