In an ideal world, Charlie Parker's trip to Los Angeles in 1946 would have gone off without a hitch. But Bird found the L.A. audiences to be unreceptive to bop, and the trip really hit rock bottom when he suffered a nervous breakdown and ended up spending six months in a mental hospital. Nonetheless, some good did come out of that L.A. visit; it was in L.A. that Parker started recording for Dial. Assembled by Cleopatra's Stardust label in 2000, The Best of the Dial Years isn't the first CD to focus on Bird's Dial output of 1946-1947 and certainly won't be the last. The collection boasts some of his most essential Dial recordings with Miles Davis (including definitive versions of "Yardbird Suite," "Ornithology," "Night in Tunisia," and "Moose the Mooche"), and the sound quality is generally good for 1940s recordings (thanks to Stardust's digital remastering). But this 11-track CD only scratches the surface where Bird's Dial output is concerned; essential gems like "Relaxin' at Camarillo" and "Cool Blues" are missing. And while Bird's September 18, 1948, recording of "Parker's Mood" is legendary, it doesn't belong on this collection because it was recorded for Savoy instead of Dial. Stardust should have either steered clear of Savoy material or called the CD The Best of the Dial and Savoy Years. But while this isn't the ideal or most comprehensive collection of Bird on Dial, it does offer superb, incredibly influential material and is one of the places where novices can get a quick and affordable introduction to the bop master's innovations. ~ Alex Henderson, All Music Guide
