Blues & Ballads by Duke Ellington on CD
Blues and Ballads spotlights Duke Ellington from 1956 through 1968, playing in those specific musical contexts. The 20 tracks on this compilation find Ellington fronting medium sized big bands and quartet sides featuring Paul Gonsalves on tenor or Johnny Hodges on alto. These tracks are mainly written or co-written by Ellington (including the classics "Mood Indigo" and "In a Sentimental Mood") with the exception of "I Cover the Waterfront" and Melba Liston's "Now Ain't It." While Ellington chose his sidemen for their individual characteristics and tones, they all shared a common passion for the blues, which is highlighted on this disc. ~ Al Campbell, All Music Guide
