Coltrane [Impulse!] by John Coltrane on CD


John Coltrane and his classic quartet (pianist McCoy Tyner, bassist Jimmy Garrison, and drummer Elvin Jones) are in fine form on this 1962 studio LP. High points include a passionate "Out of This World" (what did Johnny Mercer think of this version?) and a classic version of Mal Waldron's "Soul Eyes." The remainder of the program includes "The Inch Worm" and two Coltrane compositions, "Tunji" and "Miles' Mode."
