Complete 1951-1953 All Stars by Miles Davis All-Stars on CD
Now this is a crazy item. This double-CD set collects all of the master takes from Miles Davis-led sessions for both the Blue Note and Prestige labels from the years 1951-1953. It is not the complete recordings Davis did, however, only those under his leadership -- meaning the 1951 Lee Konitz-led set for Prestige and the Sonny Rollins-led 1953 session are missing. The All-Stars sessions feature 34 performances in all, with sidemen that run the jazz gamut, including Jackie McLean, J.J. Johnson, Kenny Clarke, Art Blakey, Tommy Potter, Bennie Green, Sonny Rollins, Max Roach, Percy Heath, and a dozen others. Miles fans will be familiar with all of this material from the various studio releases -- Workin', Steamin', Dig, etc., but this is the first time they have been collected chronologically anywhere for a budget price, making this set a true treat. ~ Thom Jurek, All Music Guide
