Count Basie Featuring Anita O'Day & the Tadd Dameron Trio (1945-1948) by Count Basie on CD
It's discs like this that give the European pirates a good name -- the opener alone, "High Tide," cut at Radio City in May of 1945, justifies the price, a scatting, bouncy jam built on a number by Freddie Green and Rudy Rutherford (who takes a great clarinet solo). "The Peacock" and "Swedish Pastry" come from the band's Royal Roost engagements in September of 1948, but hardly any of it overlaps with Drive Archive's Royal Roost release on Basie. O'Day actually sings with the Basie band on only five of the 13 numbers on which they appear, and on the last two (also from the Royal Roost) appears with the Tadd Dameron Trio. The band is fine throughout, O'Day dazzles with her singing and scatting, and the repertory is a mix of Basie ("High Tide") and O'Day ("Hi-Ho Trailus Boot Whip"), with the sultry R&B-flavored "That's That" a major highlight for band and singer alike. The recording, as is the tendency of transcriptions, tends to be a bit bass-heavy at some expense to the upper range, but isn't distractingly poor. ~ Bruce Eder, All Music Guide
