Different Drummers by Art Blakey & Max Roach on CD

Different Drummers is exactly that, two live sets featuring two different quintets driven in turn by two different jazz drummers, Art Blakey and Max Roach. Blakey's quintet, which includes Bill Hardman on trumpet, Jackie McLean on alto sax, Sam Dockery on piano and Spanky DeBrest on bass, was recorded in April 1957 in Minneapolis, while Roach's unit, with Kenny Dorham on trumpet, Hank Mobley on tenor sax, Ramsey Lewis on piano and George Morrow on bass, was tracked in concert on January 4, 1958 in Chicago. The first five cuts belong to Blakey while the remaining six are given over to Roach, and the differences between the two drummers (with Blakey pushing rhythm above all else and Roach taking a relatively more nuanced approach) are interesting, but neither live set is particularly essential. A particular highlight is Mobley's beautiful sax tone on the ballad "That Ole Devil Love." ~ Steve Leggett, Rovi
