En Concert Avec Europe 1: Theatre Des Champs Elysees, Paris, France (1965) by Duke Ellington & His Orchestra on CD

While many live releases featuring Duke Ellington are frustrating because of the often erratic nature of producers who select only excerpts from a concert (or series of concerts), this French release by RTE is a bit more consistent. Even though the performances are taken from three separate Paris concerts over two days in early 1965, nearly everything from the final show is present. This gives the listener an opportunity to hear a program as Ellington paced it, without the annoying fade-outs and odd transitions that might be added by another producer. Ellington's banter with the audience is largely left intact, and it is possible to enjoy works in progress like "Ad Lib on Nippon" (later a part of "The Far East Suite"), the obscure "He Huffed and He Puffed" (performed only twice during this tour and never again), the brand new "Meow" (featuring Cat Anderson, naturally), as well as the leader's still strong stride chops in a medley of James P. Johnson's "Carolina Shout" and his own "Rockin' in Rhythm." Fortunately, there are no long medleys of past hits; they are instead heard on their own or combined with at most one other song. The sound quality throughout this two-CD set is excellent, though it is no longer available due to the demise of RTE. ~ Ken Dryden, All Music Guide
