Greatest Hits [CBS Special Products] by Duke Ellington on CD
Although Duke Ellington did score a few chart hits on labels controlled by CBS, they are not contained on this Greatest Hits album released on the company's budget line. Rather, the title is meant to suggest that the songs, all co-written by Ellington, are among his best-known. Though most of them date from the 1930s as compositions, these particular recordings (which are not annotated on the release) all come from Ellington's 1956-62 tenure at Columbia Records. For example, "I Let a Song Go Out of My Heart" and "Sophisticated Lady" are from the 1956 album Blue Rose, on which the Ellington Orchestra backed Rosemary Clooney, while "Jeep's Blues" is a live recording from Ellington's July 7, 1956, appearance at the Newport Jazz Festival. Of course, the track listing doesn't live up to the title, but these are some of Ellington's most familiar songs in excellent stereo recordings made by a strong edition of his band.
