High Fidelity: A Musical [Original Cast Recording] by High Fidelity on CD

Because the story is set in a record store and most of the dialogue revolves around rock music, composer Tom Kitt and lyricist Amanda Green wanted High Fidelity: A Musical to sound like rock more than like a typical musical. There are plenty of buzzing guitars and explosive drumbeats to back this up. Many of the songs give the impression of 1970s and early '80s rock anthems or ballads, with aching, angst-filled pinnacles in each one. The performers -- Will Chase as Rob, Jenn Colella as Laura, and Jon Patrick Walker as Bruce Springsteen -- are more than happy to sink their teeth into these because this isn't just another production of The Music Man. There is an Aretha Franklin-esque R&B tune ("She's Gone"), references to hip-hop and rap ("Conflict Resolution"), and a finale that pokes fun at glam-rock spectacles, but the relatively undeveloped style of the music seems made to fit with the emotionally slow-to-evolve nature of Rob, the record shop owner, rather than something that will help move the story along and help the audience completely buy into the characters' feelings. The placement of a couple of slow and lighter textured tunes, plus the references to other types of pop music, is too deliberate to really make everything flow well as a whole. The use of extra vocals in the songs is inconsistent. Sometimes they are used exactly the way backup singers are used (as in "Cryin' in the Rain"), sometimes they come in the way a chorus would in a show tune. The latter use (as in the opening "The Last Real Record Store on Earth") tends to break up the overall vibe of the song, changing it from a rocking one to a typical attempting-to-be-progressive show tune. Although there is some pop culture awareness in them, Green's lyrics don't quite have room for the cleverness that made Nick Hornby's original novel so popular, and it is hoped that more of it made it into the dialog of the play. Kitt and Green deserve a lot of credit for deciding to write new music and not trying to fit the story to existing rock music, but judging from what's in this cast recording, there are just a few things that could be done to make it a more winning musical. ~ Patsy Morita, Rovi
